How can I protect my family?
A good way to help minimize your risk is to follow these guidelines.
Choose an SPF 15 or higher, put it on 30 minutes before going outside, and reapply
every two hours, even if its cloudy or especially after swimming or sweating. To
provide adequate protection, apply an ounce of sunscreen.
Look for shady areas under an umbrella or tarp. Better yet, stay indoors between 10am to 4pm
Wear a long-sleeved tightly woven shirt or other cover-up. Wear sun-protective clothing which provides approximately 95% UV protection
Look for those that specify UV protection. Pick one with a large brim to protect
the ears and neck.
Wear sunglasses to protect your eyes from harmful UV rays, which may cause Cataracts and Ocular Melanoma. Look for those the specify UV protection.
Babies under six months of age should be completely shielded from direct sun exposure. Apply sunscreen to infants over six months of age only, and teach older children to make applying sunscreen a part of their daily routine before they go outdoors.
- Avoid the use of tanning beds or other artificial sunlight sources
Contrary to popular belief, artificial UV lights and tanning beds are not safe!
